Think Small- Digital Scrapbooking for the Small Screen

There are so many small screens, why not digi scrap for one of them.  If you have a digital key chain, iPOD, MP3, cell phone or an iPHONE you can personalize it with a digital scrapbook page.  The rules change a little for the small screen but it is worth a try.

You can’t see all the fine details or text on a small screen.

So minimalize, de-clutter, use bold colors and very few words. Check the manufacturer’s  documentation or websites for their screen/display specifications. I pulled some data together for you.  See the table below.

Device diplay resolution
MP3 (Sony) 2 inch QVGA 320×240 at
iPOD 2.5 inch diagonal 320-by-240-pixel resolution at 163 pixels per inch
iPHONE 3.5 inch diagonal 480-by-320-pixel resolution at 163 ppi
Digital key fob (Coby) 1.5 inch screen 128 x 128 pixel resolution
Blackberry   240 x 260 pixels resolution

Layout your mini page then view it in a smaller size.  This is a good way to see how it may appear on your key chain.  Looks a lot different doesn’t it?

While in photo shop “Zoom out” and  look at it smaller. In Fireworks you can “zoom out” or “View, magnification 25%”

Satisfied with the image?    Upload it to your device,

showcase your work and your beautiful subject!

Coffee with your flowers

Just another tip.  I do this on a regular basis.

After your morning coffee, set aside the grounds to dry. When the grounds are thoroughly dried, scatter them around the garden as an organic plant food.

Garden Humor - smile while you sit in your garden!

Here is a little garden humor (wisdom included) to make you smile while you look over your domain. Sit back and RELAX.

One of the best herbicides:
no water

What do you get if you cross a four leaf clover with poison ivy?
A rash of good luck.

Why don’t you ever iron a four-leaf clover?
You might press your luck.

Raisin = A grape with a sunburn

What does the letter “A” have in common with a flower?
They both have bees coming after them.

From Foxworthy:
Signs of a Redneck Gardener
You mow your lawn and find a wheelbarrow.
You’ve cleaned your house with a leaf blower.
You can amuse yourself for more that an hour with a hose.

Have a nice time just sitting in your garden!

Watering and Mulching tips for your garden

I just love to work in my garden.  With this heat wave (at last ) these tips may be useful.

Watering Tips        Watering plants in the early morning or evening can maximize water penetration and minimize evaporation.
If you water plants infrequently, but slowly and deeply each time, you will be helping to encourage roots to grow deep. This is where the ground is moist

Doing this is more effective than watering lightly and frequently.

Mulch is usually sold by the cubic yard, here are steps to figure out how much to buy.

1. First, find out the size of the area you want to cover in square feet. This is easy; just multiply the length of your garden by the width.
2. Next, decide how deep you want your mulch to be, in inches.
3. Now multiply the size of your garden in square feet (#1) by the depth of your mulch in inches (#2).
4.  Divide the number you get in #3 by 324.

This is the number of cubic yards of mulch you will need to cover your garden.

Rose Tonic & Tea

I have a few roses in my garden and I am always nuturing them.  Here are a few tips that have worked for me.  I try so hard! These flowers aren’t the easier for me but I love them especially yellow roses.

rose       Out Black Spot!
Spray this homemade Rose Tonic by Jerry Baker on your roses:
MIX       1 tbsp. of baking soda,
1 tbsp. of light vegetable oil,
1 tbsp. of dishwashing liquid in 1 gallon of water.

Save the tea from old teabags and sprinkle it around the rose bush.  Use it like a top dressing, spread a thin (>1″) layer on the soil surface around the base of rose. Tea will give them a nitrogen boost and the worms will love it as well.

Ahhhh…. Tea for Two, the rose and the worm!

Soft Landing for First Flight

When you are a baby bird taking your first flight, it is fantastic when a flower pot is under the nest.

Smart parents’ built their nest in the canvas awning on my front porch. Patiently I have waited for the birds to fly out of the nest.

To my surprise one morning I found the flowers shaking.  A closer look revealed the baby bird took its first flight and landed in the flower pot.Look at him.  He’s even posing for the photo shoot.

What a landing right into the pot!  Here’s the pot!

 Here’s the nest.
